    In , The Brownies’ Book was the first magazine to publish the poetry of Langston Hughes, one of the most celebrated writers of the Harlem Renaissance. The Dream Keeper () contains many of his poems for children. Throughout his career Hughes wrote many books for children, and he also wrote with his friend Arna Bontemps. Canadian illustrator and author Palmer Cox ( ) was best known for his Brownies, mischievous but kindhearted elf-like sprites. The Brownies attend school, ice skate, play tennis, go tobogganing, etc. Due to the popularity of Cox's Brownies, one of the first popular handheld cameras was named after them, the Eastman Kodak Brownie camera.
